Chapel Hill Senior Tevin Loke Named District STAR Student
Chapel Hill High School senior Tevin Loke was honored Monday as a STAR Student alongside other distinguished seniors from across the county. Among an impressive group of academic standouts, Tevin earned an additional distinction: he was named the District STAR Student for the Douglas County School System after achieving the highest SAT score among all seniors in the district.
The STAR Student recognition highlights academic excellence and allows each student to select a STAR Teacher who has made a meaningful impact on their success. Tevin chose his AP Calculus teacher, Shirley Baugher, whose classroom both challenged and inspired him.
Reflecting on her experience teaching Tevin, Ms. Baugher shared, “Last year I remember commenting to Tevin that the particular concept we were learning about was a little difficult, and he replied back to me ‘Is it?’” She added, “Then again, he once stated that AP Calculus involved a ‘level of intensity that I had not really experienced in any of my previous classes up to that point,’ (YES!), so I’m proud to have challenged him!”
Tevin’s intellectual curiosity reaches well beyond the classroom. He plans to pursue a degree in aerospace engineering at one of the nation’s top STEM institutions. In class discussions, he is known for his depth of knowledge about NASA, rockets, and space exploration.
His recognition as District STAR Student is more than a reflection of a single test score. It represents years of discipline, focus, and a willingness to embrace academic rigor. Tevin has demonstrated that excellence is not just about ability, but about consistently rising to meet challenges.
Ms. Baugher, along with the entire Chapel Hill community, looks forward to watching Tevin’s journey unfold. With his talent, determination, and passion for aerospace engineering, there is little doubt that his future is headed skyward.

☀️ DCSS to Reopen Tuesday Following Winter Weather Closure
The Douglas County School System and the Douglas County Emergency Management Agency have been closely monitoring weather and road conditions over the past several days. The winter weather event that caused Monday's closure has moved out of our area, and safer road conditions have returned.
As a result, all schools and offices will resume normal operations on Tuesday, January 27, 2026.
All regular schedules, including before- and after-school activities, will operate as normal. Our administrators and the district operations department will continue to monitor conditions at all schools and will alert us immediately if conditions change.
We sincerely appreciate your patience and understanding as we prioritized the safety of our students and staff. We look forward to welcoming everyone back tomorrow.
